WWII Arsenal of Democracy Flyover
The WWII aircraft Flyover on Friday, May 8, 2015, was a magnificent view of history that may never be duplicated. So many planes that I've read about and seen in newsreels. I watched from the Custis-Lee Mansion (now known as Arlington House), the highest point in Arlington National Cemetery. Looking out over the memorials, and across to the Capital, it was quite a backdrop to the planes. We all owe a huge Thanks to those who keep these birds flying. After huffing and puffing to get up to the top of Arlington, I was absolutely humbled to turn around and see a veteran of the 1st Marine Raider Battalion on Guadalcanal sitting on the steps of the Mansion - he didn't appear winded at all!! Standing above the majesty of Arlington National Cemetery and in the presence of a WWII vet made the Flyover an even more unforgettable experience. The planes weren't all that close, and I was photographing hand-held, but I'm happy with the results.
